Towcester Mill Golf Society kicks off new season

Towcester Mill Golf Society launched its new season last week with a stableford competition of 18 holes at a cool and breezy Brampton Heath.

Now in its third season based at Towcester Mill Brewery, the Golf Society had an excellent turnout of 25 players on Saturday 18 March all resplendent in this season’s new polo shirts. The new shirts are dedicated to this year, which has been named the Paul Morton Memorial Tour, after the popular member who passed away last October.

The 25 players battled it out over the heathland course which was in its usual excellent condition. Many of them commented on the lightning speed of the greens which may explain why the average scores were rather low.

“After all the scores were counted, the winner on countback, with a highly creditable 39 points, was Craig Gardener,” explained golf society chair, Gareth Roberts. “The team prize went to Craig, Anne Scott, Eric Murray and Phil Tonkinson, and nearest the pin in 3 went to Steve McEneaney. Craig also picked up nearest the pin in 2. John Joe Burke won both nearest the pin and longest drive competitions. It really was a great first event for 2017!”

Towcester Mill Golf Society plays at various local courses once a month on a Saturday between March and October and is always on the lookout for new members. Gareth added, “If you are interested in joining this happy band of golfers, please contact me on 07983 136954 for more information. Everyone is always made to feel very welcome and the society is going from strength to strength!”

The Golf Society will have its next get together at the Brewery on Friday 14 April at 8pm, before the tour moves onto Kilworth Springs in South Leicestershire on Saturday 22 April.
